Now, as all people who know anything about Big Bang’s rapper T.O.P can tell you, this (beautiful) man loves his art! If you didn’t know it before, you certainly learnt it when he joined Instagram! (https://instagram.com/choi_seung_hyun_tttop) This MV really shows off his love for the art world in all its forms.
First of all, the title of the song is legit a reference to Dadaism (Dada = Dadaism people), which is a protest art movement that was officially not a movement (Makes sense right? No? Well exactly, that’s the whole point!). It’s all based on the idea of rejecting society’s ideals and causing an uproar. If you want to learn more about this awesomeness then you can go here for a brief summary of its history :) >>> http://arthistory.about.com/cs/arthistory10one/a/dada.htm
There are references to other art styles in this video too, like surrealism and abstract art, as well as artists like Salvador Dali and Kim Whanki. We also have T.O.P sitting on a Zebra (well really it’s a horse cosplaying as a zebra but oh well), which may seem random but when it’s used in art it stands for individuality.
We also have references to influential movies in this video, such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Blair Witch Project, Brazil, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, The Leopard and Dr. Strangelove. We also see T.O.P chilling inside a Zoetrope, which is the original form of motion picture.
There’s also a reference to Greek mythology, specifically Helios (the Sun God), who was known as “the all-seeing” (coz he snitched on Aphrodite and Ares) and only seeing one of T.O.P’s eyes in parts of the video could represent “the all-seeing eye” thing. Also his son set fire to the Earth when he tried to drive the Chariot of the Sun across the sky (like bro, you should have known that Daddy’s chariot would be hard to drive geez).
All in all this MV seems to be telling us that the music industry is becoming too focused on making money (Capitalism yo!) and that we should go back to focusing on making music that’ll have artistic value for years to come.
P.S Is it just me or does the eye patch also kinda remind you of Ciel Phantomhive from Black Butler?
